Darwin and the schools

Around 1900, when natural history (biology) became mandatory in the Danish public schools, it was eagerly discussed whether or not children should be taught the theory of evolution. It was a controversial subject and the socialist and atheist Vilhelm Rasmussen caused heated reactions when he argued that evolutionary studies should replace religious studies in schools.
