Jens Christian Hostrup (1818-1892)

Writer, Grundtvigian clergyman, MA theology 1843, reverend in Silkeborg and Linå 1855-62, pastor at Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød 1862-81, liberal politician.

The reverend and author of popular comedies J.C. Hostrup wrote a humorous poem in 1871 commenting on the widespread debate about evolution. As the title of the poem En Naturforskers Stamtavle [The Scientist’s Pedigree] indicates the central issue of the debate was the question of man’s relationship to the animal world, especially the apes.
